Grade 4 English: notice how sentences work
Read a short passage, identify describing and action words, and use evidence from the text. Talking through an answer is part of the activity.
Find the job each word does
In “The small turtle crawled,” turtle names the animal, crawled tells the action, and small describes the turtle. These are a noun, a verb and an adjective respectively.
Try changing the adjective or verb: “The curious turtle hurried.” Notice how the meaning changes even though the sentence structure stays similar.
Read, then return to the evidence
Passage: Mira put a shallow bowl of water near the garden wall. A sparrow landed, drank, and flew back to the tree. Mira watched from a distance so the bird would not be disturbed.
Find an answer in the passage before guessing. What did Mira put near the wall? What suggests she wanted to give the bird space? Underline the words that support your answer.
