Grade 5 English: connect ideas clearly
Good sentences help a reader follow an idea. Practise agreement, choose useful connecting words and work out vocabulary from context.
Match the subject and verb
In the present tense, “The bird sings” uses a singular subject. “The birds sing” uses a plural subject. Read the subject first instead of choosing the verb by how close another noun is.
Compare “The box of pencils is on the table” with “The pencils are on the table.” In the first sentence, box is the subject; of pencils adds information about it.
Use context to connect meaning
A connective explains how ideas fit together. Because gives a reason: “We took umbrellas because the sky was dark.” Although introduces a contrast: “Although it rained, the match continued.”
Read this sentence: “The path was narrow, so the walkers moved in single file.” The result helps explain narrow: there was little room for people to walk side by side.
